Course Open

In the fourth consecutive year of our annual Junior Exchange with Marks G C, near Gothenburg, in Sweden it was our turn to host the exchange at West Lancashire G C this year.

A party of 13 Swedes including 9 juniors and 4 adult team leaders were hosted by our Junior members and Junior Organisers Phil Marsh and Caryl Evans during their 5 day stay with us.

The age range of our visitors was 14 -18 and their handicaps ranged from 2 to 17. About half of our visitors had been to the club two years ago on their first visit but for the others it was a new and interesting experience. Similarly about half of our juniors had either been on the trip last year or been involved with the visit back here two years ago.

We played a Canadian Greensomes, 4BBB, 3 player team event at Hesketh, Pairs’ Open and finally a Ryder Cup style singles match play with Sweden v England for a trophy we purchased last year for this keenly contested annual match. Last year our Swedish hosts won the trophy on home ground and we managed to win it back on our home ground this year.

Although the weather was mainly dry with just occasional small showers, an often strong and blustery wind provided a real challenge of links golf at its best for our visitors, who play a parkland course at home. Everyone was extremely impressed with the beautifully presented course and the wonderful slick greens.

More friendships were cemented and several of our juniors who have not yet been on the exchange to Sweden are now hoping to make the trip back there next year.

We are very grateful to our Junior & Colt host families for looking after our guests and the club for providing tee times, excellent catering and support from the pro shop during the visit. Many thanks also to our adult members including the Captain and Lady Captain who partnered our visitors and own juniors in the special Junior/Adult Pairs’ Open on 3rd August.
