Course Open

A hundred competitors took part in the English Women’s stroke play championship at the club last week including three of our own members, Grace Cannon, Eloise Healey and Hollie Muse.

The weather stayed dry for the championship with some strong winds testing the competitors on the links. Much praise for the course was received from the organisers, Golf England as well as the competitors and spectators. Many volunteers from the club helped to run the competition smoothly.

On the final day of the 72 hole competition, after the cut, when the top 40 players with scores of +12 and less played 36 holes, the leader board changed dramatically. At the start of the day the lead was shared by Elisabeth Prior (Burhill), Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe)and Cloe Frankish (Chart Hills) who were all -3. Samantha Giles (St Mellion) was tied fifth in the third round with a level par score which put her three behind Prior, who was the sole leader going into the final round. In the last round the winner, Samantha Giles, played the steadiest round finishing with a -2 final round giving her a -1 overall winning score as the only player finishing under par at the end of the competition.

Elisabeth Prior (Burhill), who was in the lead during the third round had to settle for second place after she finished one shot behind on level par. Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted) was third on +1, while Gemma Clews (Delamere Forest) and Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe) were joint fourth on +2. Amelia Williamson (Royal Cromer) finished in sixth place on +3.

Our girls represented the club well with Hollie Muse finishing 11th and Eloise Healey 32nd .
