The finals took place over the weekend of 28-29 September at The Staverton Park Golf Course near Daventry in Northamptonshire.
In the semi finals played on Saturday 28th September our A & B team were drawn against each other. In the other semi final Thorpe Hall were drawn against Exeter.

It was a closely fought semi final, played in great spirit  as each team battle to win. In the end our A team beat the B team with one match drawn and the other won 2 up, although Jess and Maddie will wonder what might have been, if they had sunk their putts on 17 and 18, to win the holes.

In the other semi final Exeter battled hard against Thorpe Hall winning one of their matches 1 up, but losing the other 4 down.

After the golf on Saturday, we had a wonderful evening with an evening meal for all the Juniors, Organisers and parents. This was hosted by the BCCS President and the organisers, Ian and Christine Restall. Everyone had a great evening, making new friends and listening to the highlights of the days’ golf.

The two losing semi finalists went out first to play for 3rd and 4th place. After 18 holes the girls won 1 up and the boys lost 1 down on the 18th when the Exeter team sank a ten foot putt to win the hole. So now they had a play off, which was decided by the two lowest hcp players out of the four who in the same fourball better ball format played each on the 9th & 18th hole, which were the two designated play off holes. The 9th was halved with a birdie. The 18th was also halved with a birdie after a wonderful chip in off the green from Maddie and a 20ft putt from the opposition. So as a heavy rain shower came they went back to the 9th tee for the third extra hole as all the players wanted to continue the battle despite being offered a draw by the organiser. The 9th was also halved with a birdie and the organiser then stepped in to call it a draw as it was difficult to manage the play off with many other players out on the course.

The final between WLGC Team A and Thorpe Hall G C proved to be a difficult match for our team of low handicap players against an inform Thorpe Hall team with two girls off a handicap of 23 playing well below their handicaps with two very good low handicap boys. Despite trying valiantly to overcome the other team our boys could not beat the girls who got so many shots and made very few mistakes. Both pairings lost and the Trophy and Gold medals went to Thorpe Hall GC, but our boys received a silver runner up medal each.

To have two of our teams in the final and finishing runners up and joint third in this National Junior knock out competition was a tremendous result and showed some excellent play by both teams who did themselves and the club proud with their performance.

Their commitment throughout the season and their team spirit, working together to make things happen has been outstanding, they have been wonderful to be with on some long trips as we got further into the competition, particularly the trips to Cosby, Leicestershire and Bedale in North Yorkshire.

Many thanks to Phil Marsh,  Steve Smith and Ryan Walker for their help in looking after the teams and organising the matches.

We would like to give a big thank you to all the parents who have supported and helped with getting their children to all the matches this year including Final’s Weekend, we all had a great weekend together firming up our friendships.
