Course Open (updated 04 July at 17:41)

The competition had to be cancelled last year due to Covid restrictions, so the 13th Annual Goodall trophy Open Mixed Junior Team Competition was this year played on Sunday 26th September on an exceptionally warm and sunny day with light winds.

We had a very good entry of 19 teams, each with 4 players taking part from various clubs in Lancashire and Cheshire and all the players enjoyed the course and the competition.

Ten teams took part in the 18 hole Stableford Competition competing for the Goodall trophy and the winners were a team of players who are also members of West Lancashire G C, but on this occasion represented West Derby. West Derby would not have been able to enter a team without them and they recorded an excellent score of 93 points.  Southport Old links were runners up with another very good score of 90 points. An individual prize for nearest the pin on the 17th hole was won by Jamie Edge from Hillside and Callum Owens from WLGC won the prize for nearest the line on the 18th hole

Nine teams took part in the 9 hole Greensome (Florida) Scramble with Formby, Wigan and WLGC entering 2 teams each, while S&A, Hillside and Southport Old Links entered one team each. This year we changed the format from a straight forward Texas Scramble to a Greensome (Florida) Scramble, which ensured no player could dominate the group as the player whose shot was chosen could not play the next shot. This competition for the higher handicaps who generally would play mainly 9 holes was keenly contested with some very close scoring and several card play offs. The winning score of 34 was recorded by Hillside. Team 2 from Formby (FGC/FLGC), was second recording a score of 36, on a card play off from Southport & Ainsdale. The prize for nearest the pin on the 6th hole was won by Stevie Green from Formby Ladies and the winner for nearest the line on the 9th hole was Hermione Roberts from Wigan.

The 9 hole competitors also had an 18 hole putting competition, which was very closely contested by the two teams from Wigan. It resulted in a card play off with Wigan Team 2 winning the first prize and Wigan Team 1 the second prize.

Mavis Goodall very kindly sponsored the prizes for the competition and the prizes were presented by Immediate Past Captain Jim Brown, standing in for the Captain, and Past Lady Captain, Gill Solomon standing in for the Lady Captain Jane Hughes.
