In 2016 we celebrated 125 years of Ladies Golf at West Lancashire. As part of our celebrations we took on the exciting challenge of increasing our lady playing membership to 125. Beginners’ classes for women had been in place since 2008 but we felt that we needed a further initiative to help these ladies on their way to become members of the club. And so, the 125 School was born. Membership of the school is for those who have been on our beginners’ classes or those who have had some lessons in the past and who wish to take their golf further. Members of the school, which lasts for a year, are offered monthly roll ups with members, fortnightly skills sessions with the professionals, the opportunity to play on the course with mentors at quiet times, use of the practice facilities, a 125 club card and all the facilities of the clubhouse.
We have already achieved a significant degree of success and are continuing to move towards our ultimate target. For the first time in 40 years our lady membership has increased; from 88 at the beginning of 2016 to 109 in early 2019.

RULES OF MEMBERSHIP
The 125 School at The West Lancashire Golf Club is intended to provide a stepping-stone to full membership for those ladies who have attended our beginners’ classes but are not yet ready to join the Club. It is also open to ladies whose golf is of a similar standard.
Places in the School are limited. Unless exceptional circumstances apply a lady may be a member of the School for a maximum period of 1 year.
To join the School a recommendation from the professional team must be given. An applicant should then fill out a form (available on the club website) and return it to the professional shop. An informal interview will be held to ensure applicants’ eligibility and to explain the rules of membership.
An applicant who is accepted for membership of the School will be required to pay the sum of £300.00 to cover 6 months' membership. After 6 months, membership will be reviewed and, if agreed, a further six month maximum will be offered for the sum of a further £450.00. The increase allows for the fact that after six months in the School members are likely to be authorised to play on their own at quiet times and will therefore be on the course more often.
There are two entry points to the School, March and September. Upon payment of the subscription, a School member will be provided with a Club card.
A School member may apply at any time during their membership to join the West Lancashire Golf Club, through standard membership procedures. School members participate in a Skills Programme. The cost of participating in the Skills Programme (£90.00) is included in the cost of the subscription. 24 class lessons are provided, two every month.
School members will be invited to take part in monthly “roll-ups” with Club volunteers. Attendance at these events is encouraged. Members of the Club will act as mentors and accompany School members out on the course.
School members may use the practice facilities at any time.
Membership of the School proceeds through 3 stages: Stage 1: members of the School may take part in monthly roll-ups with members which will take place on the course but are otherwise not allowed on the course. Stage 2: members of the School may go on the course with members or mentors. Stage 3: members of the School may go on the course with other School members without mentors or members.
School members may only play at quiet times. Use of the course must be reasonable and fair and will be monitored. Tee times must be booked with the professional and whilst on the course School members must give priority to Club members and visitors at all time.
The signing-in book must be completed by the School member before going out on the course (not necessary for roll ups). One is in the ladies’ locker room and the other is in the pro’s shop (only one needs to be signed).
School members must adhere to the Rules of the Club and the Rules and etiquette of golf. School members are permitted to bring playing guests to the Club on payment of a full green fee, once in Stage 3.
School members are encouraged to attend those social events to which guests may be invited (i.e. not members’ only events). Casual get-togethers of 125 School members are held during the year.
If a School member is accepted for membership of the West Lancashire Golf Club part way through the year of membership then she will be entitled to a reimbursement, on a monthly pro-rata basis, of the subscription paid, when joining the School. This excludes the cost of the lessons which are non-refundable. A School member who is accepted as a member of the Club may continue to participate in the Skills programme or use untaken Skills sessions for private lessons with the Professional. However, participation in roll ups will no longer be an option.
If at the time of joining the Club, an entrance fee for ladies is payable, the entrance fee for a member of the School will be reduced by £450.00. If an entrance fee is not applicable or is less than £450.00 then no reduction will be applicable.
Golfers insurance is a requirement. Clubs, a bag and golf shoes are also required.
