Welcome to the Junior Section of the West Lancashire Golf Club

How the Junior Section works?

The club has two Junior Organisers Phil Marsh and Caryl Evans, who are supported by the Junior Committee. Our Junior Captain of the year also sits on the Junior Committee for their year of Captaincy. They work to organise competitions and fund raising activities for the Junior Associates and work closely in conjunction with the Head Professional, Gavin Abson and his Assistant, James Dean, both are Qualified PGA coaches to provide opportunities for coaching and County representation.

How many Junior Associates are there at the Club?

Currently, we have over 65 boys and girls in the Junior Section and we have been steadily increasing our numbers, despite many of our older Juniors leaving the Section and becoming Full Members once they turn 18 years old. Each year we have a new Junior Captain who will represent the club and all our Juniors throughout the year.

We aim to provide a safe, positive and friendly environment to develop their game at their own pace. We always endeavour to create opportunities for young people of all ages.

We have all worked hard to produce a Junior Section that we can be proud of and this is recognised within the region, as a Club that looks after their young golfers.

What facilities are there?

First and foremost we have an 18 Hole Championship Golf Course, that is in the top 10 oldest Golf Courses in the country that has hosted a wide range of national and international tournaments including Final Qualifying for The Open Championship. In addition to this we have:

  • Large Practice Ground
  • 4 Practice Holes on the Practice Ground
  • Practice Bunkers
  • Practice Putting Green
  • Practice Chipping Green
  • All our Juniors have access to the above practice area’s.

Junior Coaching and Competitions

In addition our Professional, Gavin Abson has an indoor coaching facility at the back of his excellent Pro Shop. Gavin and his Assistant, James Dean run the very successful Junior Club Night, which is held every Friday evening from Easter to the end of October, these sessions are free of charge and he is always on hand for individual lessons throughout the year.

Junior coaching sessions with Gavin and James continue through the Winter, weather permitting on a Sunday afternoon. For the older Juniors they hold Golf Clinics in the summer months.

The Junior Section arranges a variety of Junior Competitions throughout the year to cater for Juniors of all ages. For the younger Juniors or those new to the game, we arrange a number of Texas Scramble events throughout the year, following on from that, we have 9 and 18 hole Stableford and Medal competitions from March through to November.

There is also an opportunity to represent the Junior Team, in matches we arrange in RBL Trophy, The Goodall Trophy, Southport and District Junior League and the Annual Quadrangular Scratch Tournament with our friends from Formby, Wallasey and Royal Liverpool.

If this is not enough, we have an excellent Golf Exchange programme in place that takes us to Sweden every other year, to play and enjoy 5 days golf at Marks GK, there course is 45 minutes South East of Gothenburg. In the intervening years they come and visit us at West Lancahire GC.

Are you interested in joining us at West Lancashire GC?

We have a vibrant and healthy Junior Section, however, it is still very much open and we are continually looking to bring in new Juniors to make the Section better than it already is.
